Demon Sacrifice – Under the Blacklight of Divine (Supernatural Punk)

 

There’s a number of things I like about this EP. From the somewhat minimal cover evoking evil witch stuff, to the fluid, bloody logo nicely accented with an upside-down cross and candelabra, to the strange inclusion of Celtic-type knots, to the awkward English title of Under the Blacklight of Divine, I just knew in my heart that Indonesia’s Demon Sacrifice was a band to pay attention to, and of which I expect great things. To their credit, as well, this is the first band from Indonesia that’s ever been reviewed here. Trust me, I’ve received a number of promos from the country, all trash. Or, rather, bad trash. This is good trash, and it hits all the right keys so soundly they could start and end on this single release and remain legends forever as their fingernails etch their brand of punk onto your bones.

   

Technically, Under the Blacklight of Divine was already released almost a year ago, by two different labels (see below), but luckily Morbid and Miserable Records picked it up for another limited cassette run, so that gives me a reason to review it. As the guitar feedback ushers in the eerie, witcherous riffs that open the EP, you know, immediately, these guys are cold gold. Crafting a sound best described as demonically ghostly, Demon Sacrifice took it upon themselves to create a short set of tracks meant as a philosophical investigation of the notion of faith. That’s quite some big ideas for blackened punk, damn! Even without a grasp of the lyrics, the twilight atmosphere of this EP definitely succeeds in this regard. Mysterious, and quite macabre, you’d best be paying attention to Demon Sacrifice now and hopefully later. But, if they refuse to grace us with further bespellment, this EP can easily stand as their crowning achievement, and swansong, into posterity.
