Övervåld – Vigarv (Blackened Death Crust)
Here’s a nice ear killer. Sweden’s Övervåld thus far have been slaying alone, with nothing but street support, and honestly they’re good for it, and don’t need you, or anybody to accomplish their already clear goals. With an over-Xeroxed aesthetic in both visuals and sound, their particular approach to blackened death crust doesn’t have any pretensions about pushing boundaries. It’s in it to crush you, and since it’s an EP, now their third by the way, it’s probably just the right amount to satisfy before going from gore to bore, though honestly after listening to it about a million times that probably isn’t likely.
Övervåld might have a clue what they’re doing, after all. It’s quite difficult to work this kind of sound for longer than a few tracks, because by the end, let’s say if there are 10 or so, the overall effect is like CRT static in an elevator. This is the kind of stuff that’s good for a quick chug, taking a gasp, and then moving on to another gulp, if you can take it. They’ve got their format down to a science with the guitars and bass sounding like a gas-powered chainsaw, Rebecca Holm’s vocals combining gruff power with vitriol, and a dirty streets atmosphere. You should find it worth several spins until you need a breather, but even if you don’t make sure you pay attention to where they go in the future.
