Jade – Mysteries of a Flowery Dream (Poetic Death Metal)
I’ve become something of a good acquaintance with the singer of this band, not just because of Jade itself, but his other projects, and the entryway he provided into the world of the Spanish underground in all its splendor. So don’t read this as a friendly handshake, because whether or not I know him doesn’t matter. This is a band that understands the finer details of which death metal is capable of producing, especially when it comes to atmosphere. Spain has been, to my mind, slowly building into a monolith of atmospheric metal, and Jade’s latest, Mysteries of a Flowery Dream, shall stand as another proof of my hypothesis.
I was amazed with the last one I reviewed, but now I almost want to take that score back, grade down slightly, and give it to this one, but instead I’ll just grade this one higher because it deserves it. Jade prove, yet again, their complete command of atmosphere. Each track in Mysteries of a Flowery Dream flows like darkly sentimental poetry, and to date presents their most intricate work. The amount of detail present herein would be a dissertation in itself, but taken as a whole we find Jade bringing their particular brand of esoteric gloom to even higher levels of artistry. This is pure metal versification folks. Open the pages, read the words, and let the emotion flow over you with all of its rhythm and tone.
