Kontusion – Insatiable Lust for Death (Manly Death Metal for Real Men)

Now here’s an interesting development. I’ve seen bands evolve, or grow, as it were to some. That’s pretty easy I’d say. But what if a band remains stagnant, can that be a good thing? When I previously encountered Kontusion their sound was a bleeding type of death punk, in a sense, corrupted to its Xerox-as-aesthetic core. Also violent, angry, powerful, and all of the fine terms that could make a misogynist out of the gentlest of souls. But it’s super easy to ride on rawness to have that effect. Refining one’s sound, while maintaining that level of beast, is a challenge few can accept. Can you make a real man out of me in doing so? Evolution is easy. Turning refinement into a weapon takes talent. Can you do it?

Yes, screams Kontusion in a manly sort-of way. Yet again they’re bringing beef and turning your flesh into the ground version, but this time the fat is cut. Want to be covered in bruises and wear them like badges as we men are known to do? Then Insatiable Lust for Death is your ticket to manhood. Though they utilize the same approach as their previous work, Kontusion has this time refined their sound to a level above course, but not so far as to be relatable. This is pure terror, raw shock is no longer the crutch. Whereas their demo leaned on raw to achieve its ends, Insatiable Lust for Death leans on skill. Kontusion craft hefty riffs, the drums have serious heft (especially in the kicks), and the vocals are the heftiest of all with deep, manly bulk adding chunk to your trunk. I’ve listened to this full-length probably ten times through by now and each time I swear I’ve gained an inch in size, in various ways.
