Lugubrious Garment – Demo MMXXV (Atavistic Death Metal)

I’m so proud of myself that I got to use the word ‘lugubrious’ finally. I actually didn’t even know it was a word until this gem oozed itself up to the surface of the promo swamp. A side project of the dejected Italian insanity machine Cosmic Putrefaction (Gabriele Gramaglia), Lugubrious Garment was conceived as a primal and, quote, “direct” approach to death metal, formed in a non-womb in the winter of last year leading into a spring awakening in 2025 that finally culminated in Demo MMXXV. Rising from the shadows of the colder months, this three-track demo continues to suffocate after the last bit of feedback fades.

Are you ravenous to a neanderthalic degree? Lugubrious Garment is, personally, my favorite project of this one-man, metal champion. In spite of Demo MMXXV consisting of only three tracks, it’s more than most full-lengths can offer. With its thick and abrasive production, which refuses to sacrifice clarity, the various components manage to carve massive space out of murkiness. Guitars crushingly develop moments of dread, with frenzied passages pulling your face out of the mud for a brief grasp of air. I’d call it a shifting of tectonic plates, but honestly it’s more liquid than solid, revealing an impressive dynamism that is made all the more glorious through some of the best vocal textures I’ve ever heard. Low growls pass by deep wounds and scars in the throat, balanced by gurgling shrieks that easily match the tempo shifts. At first it’s honestly going to feel like familiar territory, but ultimately, each listen flays off another layer until you’re pretty sure you’re witnessing a revolution at hand, though one thoroughly haunting in nature. Primal types of death metal tend to limit variation, but Lugubrious Garment smothers the old with his wet and rotting sound, cast upon the listener like centuries-old burial robes.
