Desolus – Dwellers of the Twilight Void (Impending Apocalypse Satanic Thrash)
Yes, my boys are back! Now, before someone construes this as favoritism, it just so happens I love these guys, and it just so happens I’m reviewing them again, got it? Because they’re good! So no accusations of pandering, please! And, let me tell you, I don’t bother with bands unless they show general growth from one release to the next. I don’t want the same shit, and neither should you! That’s why Desolus is easily one of the hardest-hitting, masters of apocalyptic thrash, perhaps the masters of it, at least in their land of DC. Best watch out the rest of you, because as Dwellers of the Twilight Void shows, this newly established quartet is the impending doom every generation talks about, except this time it might be real.
I can’t even choose a winning track here, so I’m just going to be general (not that that’s anything new). Desolus have here gone for a more sharp presentation, placing the riffs slightly in the background with the rest of the slam, which enables a cutting and bleeding the harshest of thrash metal bands can only dream of creating. This is especially important here because we have two guitars ripping the skin, not just one one (now they’re a four-piece, as previously stated). But in all the Satanic, sci-fi, doom scrolling narrative they compose, there’s something quite important, and that’s the imposing vocals. I dug them before, but somehow they’ve gotten even more form this time around, sounding at times like a pit fiend, at others a witch who won’t die, screaming at the crowd watching her hang. This balance creates a special sound I can’t say I’ve heard before, and this usage of a partially feminine (no offense intended) edge fills out the catastrophic ubiquity of Dwellers of the Twilight Void to near perfection.
