Wyrdstæf – Primordial Bloodlines (Primitive Nature Experimental Blackened Ambient Metal

Just when I think I can’t be surprised anymore along comes a group of freaks with a tested vision like Wyrdstæf, who completely defy so many different genres it’s fruitless to attempt to ground their music in anything. Dubbing themselves extreme metal/dark ambient (close enough), the band has done nothing other than an EP that’s basically transformed into this, their debut full-length, Primordial Bloodlines (minus one track from the other). With that in mind, understand now their goal is to, quote “[evoke] the ancient stories of humans living in the prehistoric past…between the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic eras when humans lived in nomadic tribes of hunter-gatherers and migrated by foot across the world.” Sound verbose? Perhaps, but 100% corect.

Interested yet? You will be once the ritualistic proem leads into the album proper. Wyrdstæf uniquely draws from some primeval essence of human kind. I’m not sure quite how they managed this, but you’ll feel your native blood, whatever it may be and whether or not you’re aware of it, throbbing to life, awakening some past identity you can’t fully grasp but yet which feels necessary and natural. Truth be told, I found out this was their exact intention when I happened upon one of their Instagram reels. So not only was it intentional in this regard, it was completely perspicuous. This, combined with an unrelenting taste for blood through riff, turns this release into something beyond the usual. Awaken your own past! Command the power of your ancestors, wherever they be from! Return your soul to primitive purity! Only Wyrdstæf can command the pulse!
