Sněť – V Bažinách Vědomí (Deeply Rooted Blackened Gore Punk)
Yes, I finally figured out a name for the style of these sickos. Czechia’s Sněť have had my heart (sorry ladies) since I first heard their last full-length, and the romance continues with their latest offering, V Bažinách Vědomí. I could stop there but allow me to be partially verbose, if you please. Sněť, with their wonderful artwork manifested by their in-band bro Tomáš Mitura, have this special style that elevates above what I’ve heard from Czechia over the past decade. Though there’s a definite deep set of roots in the soil of death metal, with some gore and abhorrent sexuality leeching into the soil, there’s a particular blackened punk edge to their work, with just the right touch of dark folk (which you won’t really notice), that makes it truly a special treat.
V Bažinách Vědomí (In the Swamps of Consciousness) is proud of its roots. And, as mentioned above, those roots are deep into the cemetery of death metal, with a faint touch of sanguine, carnal street smarts feeding what life remains. If you look at the cover, it gives a great sense of how this band works. Plenty of the textures will sound familiar, yet they weave into the work elements that are truly personal in nature, with an Eastern European bite that was at leas partially responsible for World War I kicking off. There’s a mordant tension to the whole of it, riffs working like cliff-hangers at the end of a grim fairy tale, but toss in those thick vocals and it goes from childhood terrors to purely malevolent.
