Hexer – A Black Flame in Cosmic Void (Worth Your Ear Blackened Sludge Metal)

Another end of a week, another loss of countless promos tossed into the bin because they were horrible. I like to review two to three submissions per week, but they have to pass the test to even warrant my attention. Art first, sound second. In that order. I had a ton of great covers, but the music? I can’t even… Luckily for Germany’s Hexer, the promo for their latest EP came in mere days before drop, which is officially tomorrow or maybe two days, I forget. Either way, it just made the timing cut (something else I pay attention to in most, but not all, cases), and it’s a good thing it did because there’s little that needs stated about this one other than, simply, “it’s just a good release.”

That being said, it’s certainly not perfect. But, that also being said it’s not like Hexer don’t deliver something worth your ears. A Black Flame in Cosmic Void is a finely exuded hunk of blackened sludge. Hexer keeps their approach rather straightforward, but it’s heavily supported by some of the most exquisite production I’ve heard in awhile. Who was this master of the dark musical arts? Whoever it was, maybe the band itself, it brings out the finer details of this EP. All the sullen, sharp riffs are made far more profound by the robust bass working in the background. Just these two elements together, working in cohesion, makes for an easy, quick listen to put on repeat. So don’t take what I said earlier at pure face value, listen, and you’ll see why Hexer have much akin with the title of this EP.
