Destruction of Orion – Dimensions of Chaos (Classical Symphonic Funeral Doom)

I think I have a new favorite funeral doom band, guys. How many times have I said the following (keep reading)? Funeral doom is one of the most difficult genres in my opinion. It seems easy on the surface, just slow things down to Precambrian Grief level and that’s it, or so many bands believe. But due to the nature of the genre and its focus on an epic crawling of riffs, in reality it needs far more around the basic format to build a true edifice of suffering. If that’s your goal, and you only accent the drag, slow becomes simply sluggish. But Bulgaria’s one-woman sad factory, Destruction of Orion, knows better. She knows real terror, real heartbreak, real betrayal, and most definitely real loss (I can tell). Combining the deliberate languid quality of funeral doom with a stronger usage of symphonics is what really places her at the new forefront. I thought it had probably all been done in funeral doom until I heard Dimensions of Chaos.

I didn’t realize how much I needed to be forlorn today, but now I am, forever. Destruction of Orion take the classical funeral doom drag to its limits, but she’s learned that building the sounds around it creates the kind of album that sticks in your head even when you forget the melodies. I found this one swirling slowly in my mind as I fell asleep, as I walked, as I lived, and I’d probably hear it as my body decomposed in the grave. She’s that good at capturing you. It’s rather easy to explain how, but I don’t think there are many other bands capable of doing this. Dimensions of Chaos sure sounds like funeral doom, but the inclusion of sweeping keyboards (perhaps real instruments they sound so full at times) and even choral chants builds into a true definition of funeral in the royal sense. I think only the flute sounds in track five grated me a bit, but the rest of it is so damn impressive I hope she puts that cover art on a shirt so I can make everyone around me cry. Yeah, the art too, fuck… Peak funeral doom here, suffice to say, and you better pay attention to what she does after this. Expect the end of all life, for real for once.
