Magick (NSFW Magic Demon Brothel Horror)

Anyone who’s read my reviews knows how highly I rate Judith Sonnet. Not only an amazing person, but an absolute prolific writer who sends out banger after banger into the universe. Magick was written in 10 days, and to me that just tells you how amazing a writer must be when 10 days worth of writing is on the same brilliance level as her other books. Porn producer “Jace” buys what was once a brothel, with a horrific past, and known for its many hauntings. Now named “Magick Mansion,” Jace specifically bought it as a backdrop for her and her stars to create sexual magic on screen. What they all didn’t bargain for was the house’s sexually charged energy which grasps each character, changes and warps their mind, and ultimately feeds them to the devil himself. Judith is very very good at writing stories like this. Gruesome, sometimes purposefully cringe, sickening, descriptive to the point where you sometimes want to wash your eyes with bleach. The characters are there to be killed and maimed by the evil within this house; there is little to no backstory for this specific reason.
“His anus had been plundered with a knobby cane, about the length of an arm. Salt was clasping the shaft of the offensive staff, and she stirred it rapidly, as if churning butter. Frank could hear what the staff was doing to Darren’s organs. It was mashing them into a pulp. Pink liquids flowed out from his prolapsed anus whenever the staff was lifted up. The smearing stain was growing between his opened legs like water from a leaking bath.”
The house is its own character, the things that possess it are the main characters, and ultimately that is what steals the show. I particularly loved the ending two chapters, where the reality of this once brothel is shown to light; it’s a demons playground where the living and dead are tortured by the otherworldly beings into eternity. There is no good ending, there is no happiness. It’s the layers of hell and it’s unrelenting and that’s what makes it so brilliant. This book is here to shock you and to make you feel gross and I think sometimes that’s what extreme horror is and Judith never shies from that, which makes me enjoy it even more. I’d love a more in-depth story or a follow-up on “Magick Mansion.” There’s backstory at the beginning which explains why it is the way it is, but I’d love an even more exploration into that almost portal-esque reveal at the end.
