Pneuma Hagion – From Beyond (Texas Twang Blackened Death Metal)

 

Putting one’s name in another language, especially one of the original Holy Languages, is scary. I’m shaking already from Pneuma Hagion, whose usage of “holy spirit” as their name sounds actually threatening when placed into the Greek. And, daimn, you tossed in some fecking William Blake art on top of that? This is truly From Beyond chaps. But, let’s add something special to that, because this one comes with a heavy dose of yeee hawww.

   

WTF is this guy on about now? Featuring one primary dude and a buddy, and coming from a background of tons of other bands, Pneuma Hagion are more artful with their approach, and more Texan, since they’re from Texas. In fact, that’s one of the primary angles I got out of this one that made it worth repeated spins. There’s a rooting, and yes tooting, twang to their brand of blackened death metal. It’s a noticeable dialect, so to speak, especially with the repeated usage of sharp harmonics, that gives spurred kick to an otherwise standard release, and the focus on religious themes comes off as educated instead of simplistic. After multiple listens it can blend together, but give it some time, toss it back in, and you’ll find their approach tasty and thick. I tip my hat to these rough rowdies and line-dance to their grind.
