The Profane Exhibit (Gorrific Horror Anthology)

 

The Profane Exhibit is a horror anthology featuring the talents of several international genre directors, and the horror tends to skew a bit more extreme and sadistic than what most fans likely go for. If you enjoy the films of the New French Extremity Movement and similar, then you’re likely the target demographic for this collection of ten twisted tales. The film features incest, sexual violence, body horror, and things that are certainly not for the squeamish. The ten segments of The Profane Exhibit puts its runtime just under two hours, which is a bit long, but that’s the biggest strike against it. Like most anthology films, some segments are much better than others, but when it shines, it truly shines.

   

Featuring segments from directors such as Uwe Boll (Postal, Rampage), Ruggero Deodato (Cannibal Holocaust, Body Count), Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police, The ABCs of Death), Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes, Colossal), Jeremy Kasten (The Dead Ones, The Wizard Of Gore 2007), and Anthony DiBlasi (Dread, Malum), among others, The Profane Exhibit features religious horror, an incestuous hostage scenario (based on the real life Fritzl Case), a sinister killer chef, a lab experiment by way of ritual sacrifice, a concentration camp, an extreme bondage club, and way more jammed into its segments. There’s even a bit of horror star pedigree in Boll’s segment “Basement” with Clint Howard (The Ice Cream Man) and Caroline Williams (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), both turning in some truly disturbing performances as an incredibly fucked up couple. The highlights are easily Deodato’s “Bridge,” in which a pair of innocent young children cross paths with a suicidal woman on a treacherous wall, Nishimura’s Hell Chef in which a young woman carries out murders with the assistance of a demonic chef who then teaches her to how to cook her victims, and Stivaletti’s “Tophet Quorum,” a disturbing tale that took a few insane turns that I did not see coming at the start. If extreme horror and violence is your thing and you want a healthy sampler platter of some shorter tales, The Profane Exhibit is guaranteed to stick with you long after the credits roll.
