Rotpit – Long Live the Rot (Complexly Flippant Swedish Death Metal)
I’ve seen bands evolve before, but rarely to this level. Rotpit’s first full-length came out over a year ago, and I gave that one a bunch of glittering generalities, some jokes about their style, but still with a strong positive recommendation, so imagine how tickled my tummy was when I saw a new one dropping. Yaaay I’m ready to puke again! I thoroughly enjoyed their flippant attitude the last time focused so thoroughly on the word ‘rot’ it was practically it’s own separate genre of Swedish death metal, but this time I have to say I was wrong about that summation, or least they’ve grown beyond it. With their latest, Long Live the Rot, Rotpit is not just serious, but bringing some serious rot. Lol, nevermind they’re still those guys.
You think I’m joking? I never joke. Rotpit have a very distinct approach that sounds at once serious, yet not. As all the girls out there know, that makes for the most enticing features of a potential mate, and I’m about ready to birth multiples to this Swedish trio. If you’re familiar with previous work, Long Live the Rot will sound the part, and it most definitely brings rot, but it’s going to amaze you in ways for which their last appearance would likely leave you unprepared. Rotpit are more detailed-oriented now; the music doesn’t have the same purposefully superficial presence, it’s more complex, yet still smothering the listener in its rot-obsessed themes to a point so past loquacious it achieves its own separate sphere of existence. With a variety of textures in the riffs, drums, bass, and vocals, there’s far more to find in Long Live the Rot, and once you learn that the rot is more than a theme, it’s a way of life, you’ll get it. Gone is simplicity now, but forever lives the rot!
