Behemoth (Hideous Colossal Beast Slaying Dark Fantasy VR)

VR still remains an interesting market that’s largely niche in spite of big pushes by companies like Meta over the past five years. The reason for this currently seems to be the cost, firstly, but also the uncertainty surrounding the experience. Trust me, it’s weird at first until your brain adjusts. As games like this, however, become more commonplace, the industry will likely make a shift as the average consumer base starts to buy more into it, perhaps in a way similar to PC-gaming currently, but either way, with titles like Behemoth it shouldn’t be much longer. A Dark Souls-type adventure where you fight hideous garantuas like Shadow of the Colossus? Damn, yeah, that’s a no-brainer. In this dark fantasy world play as Wren the Hunter, a cursed warrior from a fallen kingdom. The curse? Behemoth power bitch. And with that power you get to slay giant creatures and poke out eyeballs with swords.

Skydance Interactive has laid out some serious VR shit in the past few years, but this one really did it for me. The dark fantasy setting placing you in first-person immersive while navigating around giant beasts and chopping off the heads of provincials is just fucking amazing. Though VR still carries its share of jank, no matter how good the dev team is, Behemoth is exceptional to a level that brief moments of this matter not. Game mechanics like blocking actually feel as though they have real weight, and the insanely epic world you enter makes the price worth it just to look around. Among all the snow-covered ruins and majestic environments you’ll find yourself staring for the hell of it until some provincial loser breaks your reverie to square up for a battle. Generally the play will likely not pose much of a challenge to experts, but with all the special mechanics to learn it’s not a game you can simply rush. The narrative elements ramp up the immersion to keep you focused, but goddamn fighting those colossal beasts won’t just make you want to forget about reality for awhile, you might abandon it entirely. Just top notch shit all around.
