With the start of the new year, it makes the most sense to start things vile. Why wait for things to get worse? Let’s make it so. There have been a number of bands of the type you’ll find here, dealing out crude, metal brutality, sometimes with a distorted bang, at others with aggression that’s more sonically inclined. As true to Caligari Records form, known for cult tape drops, we have here VOIDHÄMMER, a Los Angeles-bred three-piece of viscerality that with their debut, Noxious Emissions, demand volume of the listener beyond what your speakers are probably capable.
VOIDHÄMMER makes no attempts to break the mold of crudeness this type of death metal is known for. The production is lo-fi, yet not so out of reach as to be niche, thus you’ll find drums thundering away as low-end bass and guitar make their due through bulldozing. Songs about bloating corpses and leaking coffins are delivered with all the melody that crust can muster, which of course is not much, and we like it like that. Toss some grind over the layers of distortion, add in themes of world decay that are forever timeless because humanity sucks, and this four-track debut is about what you’d need to keep things toxic for the coming year.
