Lago – Vigil (Isolating Experimental Death Metal)
Well, you know, I sometimes fancy myself a hideous shade of human existence, or at least the child of such beings, and Lago, who hail from the United States, are perfectly ready to fulfill my desires to identify as other to such a severe degree I’m unrecognizable as something alive. I’ve decided from now on I’m just going to isolate myself and hide away from everything. But to be fully and completely oppressed, I needed a complex dose of experimental death metal. Because, listen, I don’t want anyone getting close to me anymore, and Vigil sets up the best kind of environment.
It’s an environment that no one will want to be in for long. Good. We haven’t had a full-length out of Lago for eight years now, and considering the density of what we get in their latest, it all makes sense, as it must have taken at least a year to write each of the tracks! Add to that one year, interspersed, to give themselves fully to the gods of isolation, and Vigil is the necessary result. This isn’t an album that you can sit and enjoy in the way you’d like, honestly. It requires a good sit, a good think, and a good swoon from the ennui that results. Completely contrarian in its development and style, Lago prove why they deserve their own unique position in USDM, far away from anyone or anything you want to enjoy. So bend, tear, and rend convention to itty bitty shreds scarcely enough for a maggot to enjoy.
