Goetia – Mortuary Cult (Savage Blackened Death Punk)
I was at a loss recently, because the majority of promos were just terrible. This might be one of the worst weeks on record for me, but it’s just the luck of the sucky draw. I was down to a few, but in the end the final review we have today to end off the week will be the debut full-length from Goetia, Mortuary Cult. Since this intro lacks my usual biting wit you might think I’m settling, and, no, but honestly I don’t have anything better to compare it to so perhaps you’re right. Either way, we’re here, and we need to get into it.
Being real now, I actually dug this shit the first time I spun it. Wait, why do we still say spin if most of this shit is digital anymore? Force of habit, apparently. Anyway, Goetia is clear in their intentions within a few seconds (after the ominous intro, rather). The guitars, bass, and drums surge with absolute savagery to the point that you’ll be but a puddle of liquid remains only midway through. And, though the vocals are some of the most immutable I’ve heard for this kind of metal, their choleric edge somehow keeps you interesting. Nothing like a volatile chap on the mic, I must say. If there’s any complaint to be made, it’s that Mortuary Cult defines itself immediately and never diverges. Whether or not that’s a problem I’ll leave it up to you, but probably not.
