Viande – Monument Aux Morts (Debonair Blackened Death Metal)

For a band who’s name just means “meat” you might not expect much. I know it’s in French, but come on now. It does sound cool with the accent, however, I’ll admit, but if you’re a first-timer for the power that is Viande, you might be wondering if it’s worth it when they’re named after one of the five food groups. Are they, lol, meaty? Do they pack some serious meat? What’s the meat of their sound? I kid, too much this time, but if you haven’t heard them before Monument Aux Morts is not just a proper introduction, it’s a declaration of consecration. That homoioteleuton sucked balls, but let’s move on.

I wear a pair of shorts from these guys for a reason. If this is your first experience, prepare thyself. It’s been four years since their last full-length, and the growth, or perhaps better to say maturation, or a full metamorphosis into a greater being. Because, fuck, Monument Aux Morts is like well past the teenage year and into the hot unc status who stays single because he can. Guy gets girls is what I’m saying. And that’s what Viande has become. The vocals go into basso profundo territory, which serves incredibly well with the reverberating quality to the sound. The primary music tends to shriek from the background like a tomb echo and there’s so much texture here it becomes a warm shroud to tightly wrap your gaunt body. Like some cocoon when you rip from them you emerge a silver fox one step away from dire wolf.
