Demonic Manifestation – Grimshrine (Surgical Crypt Metal)

 

Let me pull straight from the Personal Records promo email for the start of this one. Mexico’s Demonic Manifestation are driven “by a passion for extreme, pure, and honest music.” Forget the rest, because that’s the part that really matters right there. Yeah I could toss out old school, I could toss out death metal too, I could even put them together like a real journalist. Is that what you want? Well fuck you it ain’t happening here. I say it my own way.

   

It’s been almost a decade since they dropped their last full-length, but Demonic Manifestation take their time. And it’s much welcome in this era of quick hits followed by quickly forgotten. Grimshrine, to start, is a carefully pieced-together puzzle of various sounds, but to break it down to its core details is rather simple, exemplifying the honesty the trio is making their motif. The riffs have a spectacular edge that’s practically surgical, but most delicious are the vocals; carefully layered with echoing screams, chants, and beast roars so deep you’ll pube a second time. Very rarely does an album of this type work so well by being simple, but don’t take that to mean this is simplicity personified, because it’s rather simple in approach, yet complex in execution.
