Lugubrious Garment – The Wide Vale of Uncreated Night (Disconsolate Atmospheric Death Metal)

So it appears ye have found the groove ye were seeking, oh my favorite one-man deathlord? In case you didn’t know, dude here is in Cosmic Putrefaction, among other incarnations, but, personally, I’ve been focusing on Lugubrious Garment as his true calling and, you know, I believe it’s time he accepts this particular persona as a state of being. Previously I referred to his work as “atavistic” due to its primal, direct nature. But that kind of upon-the-head battering eventually leads to hemorrhaging, and we don’t want to lose the listener. The bleeding should be slow, and long. Thus, development was a requirement for this particular band, and we’re seeing this to a shocking level with the band’s first full-length, The Wide Vale of Uncreated Light.
Not only do I get to use the word ‘lugubrious’ again, but I can add to that florid speak ‘disconsolate.’ First thing to note, Lugubrious Garment has greatly upped the production and intricacy. The recording level is slightly lower, but when increased the various pieces of this grand, musical narrative are made evident. Previously, we had demo-level work, though quite good beyond that regard, but now, and by necessity, dude has risen above his Precambrian roots to move towards the Great Dying. Riffs here are far more thought-provoking, less focused on hammering the scene out of you. That’s already gone, and any more effort in a similar vein would be wasted. But, clearly, the man behind Lugubrious Garment understands the need to develop, and he’s taken that as prayer. With its variety of sound structures, twists, and atmospheric touches, The Wide Vale of Uncreated Light is a giant leap towards something, we hope, more permanent. Kind of wish I rated the demo a little lower, to be honest, because I’m out of numbers at this point. Suffice to say, the demo is now dust.
