Mechanic Tyrants – St. Diemen Riots (Dystopian Speed Metal PS Rush Sucks)

I was about to not even listen to this. The art drew me in with that killer layout, but then I read the label’s assertion that Germany’s Mechanic Tyrants is like Rush and I wanted to puke all over myself. I’m not the only one who’s said, it Rush is extremely overrated. They were talented musicians and could play, they just couldn’t write, and the majority of their tunes are background Robotech tabletop sesh white noise you don’t actually pay attention to. Comparing the beauty of St. Diemen Riots to 2112? What maniac thought that was a good idea?! Fire yourself! Get someone else to run Jawbreaker Records if you’re giving us that silliness. Tbf, the actual comment was this album is similar in scope to 2112, so I guess I overreacted. But, I definitely did not in the case of explaining to you how awesome Mechanic Tyrants is.
See what you did Jawbreaker? You made me waste all that space up there that could have been used for giving praise to St. Diemen Riots, one of the greatest speed metal albums to date. Prepare thy mind for more glittering generalities (but full of truth). Mechanic Tyrants only gave us an EP and two singles before this in their currently brief career, but with their first full-length they’re making a mark in the form of a beautiful scar branded on your forehead with an undeniably unforgettable album. This shit evokes 2000 A.D. and Rifts at the same time with oppressed scum rising up against their techno overlords in a dystopian future. The band compares their intricate patterns to that of, ugh, Rush, but Rush didn’t have a clue what they were doing, as they lacked the keen sense of theme and style that Mechanic Tyrants possesses. The musical tale they provide in St. Diemen Riots is clear in sound alone, but combined with the skilled and capable vocals of Florian (Flo) Fait, along with the occasional combination of the others’ sonorous voices, we get a leather-bound edition of a genre often too tired of itself for a proper print run.
