Gigan – Anomalous Abstractigate Infinitessimus (Technical Kaiju Death Metal)
I find it hard to believe there wasn’t another band named Gigan out there. The likely reason for this, outside of bands so minor they have 0 online presence, is likely anyone who thought of it quickly rethought the situation as “well, someone already picked that I bet,” leaving this Floridian death metal trio to claim the mantle. Wait, did you say Florida death metal? Oh shit. I’m sure you’ve heard all about that scene, and it’s great to see it still driving forwards with bands like Gigan, whose latest, Anomalous Abstractive Infinitessiumus (daimn tough to write and say) takes the best of technical and progresses it into a giant, abstract beast.
After a hiatus of roughly seven years, for reasons I didn’t feel like looking up, Gigan is back and more kaiju than ever. Anomalous Abstractive Infinitessiumus is monstrous; a hulking, densely armored behemoth whose mere toe could level an entire city. Weaving sci-fi horror with cosmic themes, Gigan take a mind-bending approach with a variety of technological effects added to practically everything including the riffs and vocals, the latter like possessed robots. Never grounding you for long, as soon as you get comfortable with what’s happening you feel like you’re being tossed into a supernova that implodes into a gaping maw of a gargantuan creature. As far as complaints, you’ll find occasional playfulness, which can ruin, though briefly, the cosmically overwhelming crush. But the beast still charges ahead in spite of these few moments.
