Inverted Cross – Eternal Flames of Hell (Goat Bowing Blackened Speed Metal)

 

First Chile, now Catalonia, what’s going on in those two countries there? Tons of crazy shit, apparently. I just reviewed Trollcave the other week, and now let’s add to the mix blackened speed metal Satanists Inverted Cross! But wait a minute, hold up now, I was just saying the other day the whole Satanist anti-Christian thing is tiresome, but this four-piece proved me wrong. Must I go back on my own words, which are commonly known as law? Can I explain why Inverted Cross changed my mind? I’m not sure, because their first full-length, Eternal Flames of Hell, seems to contradict my statements entirely in every possible way. Let’s consider the basics.

   

We’ve got Satan there, yeah. Lightning sword. Okay. Fire and bats. Sure. The word ‘Hell’ clearly used on the cover. Songs about goats. Lyrics invoking the “evil Lord” and all of that? Damn, Inverted Cross seem to be striking out already and I’m going to have to go back on my previous statements. They’ve got all the trappings of Satanist nonsense to the point that if it’s not redundant, it’s going to be a shocker, yet… Yet Eternal Flames of Hell is a shocker. Explaining why is actually rather easy. Inverted Cross play with pure confidence. They know what they’re doing instinctively, living out their days encased in leather. With riff action that’s easy to read, and absolutely no shits given about how surface-level the themes appear, this one is exactly the classic boost the damned Lord needs once in awhile. Look at the cover again. See his finger? That’s right, fucks, bow down!
