The 7th Guest VR (First-Person Haunted House Puzzle Horror)

I’ve often found the world of VR gaming is like navigating dusty tomes in a library. Because the market is still, arguably, in its infancy, and perhaps Golden Age, the way information moves is much different. Most VR advertising is done specifically through suggestions within Meta, or whichever device you use, and is not as visible. It’s something like being on Steam and seeing recommended games, or being in a secret society with open doors, just few people come through them. Honestly, if you’re not on VR, you probably won’t hear about stuff like The 7th Guest VR by Vertigo Games. Granted, this is also on Steam, but I heard nothing about it until I saw a random suggestion in Meta while playing Vampire the Masquerade: Justice. Having played the original The 7th Guest when DOS was the thing, I jumped right into the immersive experience and didn’t even check the price tag first. That part doesn’t matter, trust me.

Without spoiling anything about this release, in the original The 7th Guest, you moved through the mysterious, and haunted mansion of Henry Stauf, solving various puzzles and slowly understanding the story through the appearances of ghosts. In The 7th Guest VR this plot is largely retained with a more child-friendly approach, but really only in the sense of the removal of obvious sexual moments. Otherwise, the same light, 19th century horror that made the original work is found herein, except you’re experiencing it first-hand as a ghost with skeletal hands. Strong points include the haunting atmosphere, which works far better in VR, and the larger amount of puzzles, which themselves can be extraordinarily difficult and complex. A few run easier than the others, in no particular order (so don’t expect an ascending difficulty). With various clues hidden throughout the house, a sleek saving system, tale of evil toymaking and the dead, and smooth controls, The 7th Guest VR has all the right features of VR gaming, applied to an old idea to an observably improved extent. With more releases of this nature, we’ll likely see the market increase in capacity over the next decade.
