Prophetic Suffering – Rivalry of Thyself (Ultra-Gruesome Bestial Death Metal)

I feel like I needed this right now. I needed a warlike, unrelenting, gruesome, beat down. Leave to Sentient Ruin Laboratories, yet again, to provide the answer to my problem. Canada’s Prophetic Suffering state that their debut full-length, Rivalry of Thyself, is essentially a summoning of “pure hell,” and that’s purely sufficient to prepare thyself for it. Shit’s so gruesome it’s ultra. Plus, hey, any band like this that uses archaic English medievalspeak for flavor is going to bring rusted metal to the torture, so I’m more than ready for it.

Where to begin with something like this? Honestly, other than the static-laced intro that leads into the first track as Prophetic Suffering forms from the ether, you could pick any particular moment in any particular track and be set for life. Rivalry of Thyself is great for that. In the world of bestial death metal, it doesn’t take much to satisfy, and satisfaction is certainly not lacking here. But, of course, as is often seen, if you’re looking for any shifting forms you won’t find it. Prophetic Suffering are blatant in their approach, but not to a redundant or echoic degree. They slaughter with their musical assault, simply put, and when it comes down to it, one slice or hack in the removal of a limb is all the same in the end, so enjoy your dismemberment, bit by bit. Though, I think it disingenuous to suggest that the brutality here isn’t stronger than you’ll find elsewhere.
