Blood Monolith – The Calling of Fire (Ugly Deathgrind)

Yaaay I just had a colonoscopy. Thereafter, looking for blood that was not from my own nethers, I settled (very happily I might add) on Blood Monolith, the latest deathgrind from out of Washington DC, where corruption and gerontocracy reign supreme, to quell my frustrations at having to drink salt water and eat only eggs and rice. The Calling of Fire was my primal scream to reawaken myself, to pull myself from the drowsiness and remember that I am a beast embodied in primordial flesh and I must destroy (after I have a salad)!
You know an album is a true crush when you can’t select a particular track that crushes more than the next. But Blood Monolith proves they are an entity worthy of worship due to the nuances of The Calling of Fire. Most deathgrind is satisfied with breaking bones and calling it a day, but these guys do it with a touch of experimentation that is most unusual for the genre. Mixing odd recordings, brief electronica, and other small details, they flesh out their sound in a way that few bands of this type are capable of doing, or even conceiving. But, of course, the riff slay is brought with all the ugliness expected of this approach in a thick cover of oddity to cull the mouthbreathers.
