Autopsy Simulator (Work Like a Real Coroner and Hate Yourself Too)

Let me start by saying this is the first time a game disgusted me enough that I had to take breaks from it, and I’ve played a number of horrifying titles, such as Agony Unrated, among others. But there’s something about Autopsy Simulator that does it differently, and the simple answer is aside from hallucinatory moments related to mental health, it’s realistic. But it’s only about half of what the title implies, in fact that aspect of it is the primary area that needs work should the devs develop it further, but for what it is, you’re going to find yourself more than slightly uncomfortable. You actually take the role of coroner, for the main part at least, and where it leads you is down the deep hole of psychological horror. This is a fact few understand. Autopsy Simulator most definitely does what it says, but the main game is a story that revolves around this concept.
You play as Jack Hanman, whose wife recently died, and the memories of the event haunt you as you navigate the plot. As the story builds, you are taken through autopsies of different victims and the game builds upon your knowledge with each new corpse. These aspects of the game are brilliant. Not only are you learning the actual science behind the work, but you’re unraveling the stories of the victims, which are somewhat intertwined with your own. These sections are, as a whole, genius. Though an experienced player will figure out some of the plot direction, the ending leaves loose ends that stick in your head like a fine Gothic novel, which was refreshing. And the devs had a great sense of how to build the tension and provide the player with options. For example, I was surprised that the nudity filter was on when I started, but it’s an option to turn off, and I kind of wish I didn’t after, but boy was that some realism… Now, one final topic is the autopsy simulation itself. “Autopsy Only Mode,” though a great concept, is the area that needs further work. If anything, it simulates so well it makes you realize how boring it has to be over a real work week (successful there lol). With the skills you acquire from the story mode, by the time you’re working on random bodies the play becomes too routine and somewhat tedious. The unlocks are largely luck as you need to have specific bodies to get them. However, in spite of this, if the autopsy mode itself is tweaked, it’s a solid play, though I appreciated the story mode as a whole. To be honest, I’m not sure how it could be further refined, as it does exactly what it says and what more could one expect?
