A Beginner’s Guide to Extreme Horror (Gross Introduction for Horror Scrubs)

I think this is a first in my Deaf Sparrow history. This is not a grisly tale for gruesome kids, there’s no plot or any characters to love or hate. Jon Steffens and Ira Rat have written the ultimate A-Z guide of extreme horror movies, with their own 1-5 rating sick-o-meter, each bite-sized review has been individually watched by the author writing it, with them giving it their personal sicko rating. There are infamous classics that you’d definitely expect, like Saló, Martyrs (the French version), The Human Centipede, Antichrist and even The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. These are movies I’ve seen, and so I could agree on the ratings myself. There are also obscure films that you definitely won’t find on Amazon Prime like the sick guinea pig movies, Nekromantik (the original and its sequel), August Underground and many more.

Extreme horror films (at least in my opinion) are seldom cinematic masterpieces, a little like the book kind. Whilst they can be good to read, they often lack a plot, meaningful characters, and get straight into the gore and abhorrence. Both Steffens and Rat also noticed this in extreme horror movies. The ratings are therefore not based on how good or bad the movie is, but rather how gross and sick. This works well for the genre due to the fact that in the grand scheme of things extreme horror is rarely “good”. This really would be a great read for new viewers of extreme horror, as well as for those who perhaps love the book genre and are venturing into the movie variety. Or just for those who are seeking to add more movies to their extreme horror “to be watched” list. I’d actually love to see a version on the book genre, to see what these authors think of some of the sickest books on the market. A slightly shorter review for this one as there’s no real summary or anything. Was deffo a good little read though!!
