DEATHFUCKINGWOUND – VOID MMXXV (Entrenched Nihilistic Grindcore)

DEATHFUCKINGWOUND. That’s the name, huh? Well, I almost deleted the email, not because I’m a sensitive man, but because I didn’t feel like writing another review this week. Yet, with their completely nihilistic aesthetic, I decided to give it a few seconds, and found myself immediately eviscerated by VOID MMXXV, even a mere 10 seconds in. Plunging the listener into the deepest, dankest, most septic of trenches, this Finnish deathsquad mystery duo grabs your head with a bruised and bloodied fist, plunging it into mud that ends up being the liquefied remains of an entire species. They’ll let you up for a few moments of air before the next track begins, but by the end, your lungs will be filled with unknown matter as you welcome the end.

The apocalyptic weight of this rather short debut is surprisingly clear for how aggressive it is. In spite of the raw, overamplified approach (without bass, by the way), the massive chords and blast attacks cut through the noise without losing an of the technical precision these guys wield. When they shift time signatures it feels unpredictable yet deliberate, dragging you further through an ashen landscape where bestial, tortured shrieks embody the existential decay of VOID MMXXV. It’s completely unrelenting, please note, and almost overwhelming by the end. In the future, they could use a little distance from outright pummeling to more fully develop what they’re doing, but you won’t soon forget the cataclysm that is this debut. It’s an unnerving, yet exhilarating, leap into dark and jagged extremity.
