Funeral Vomit – Upheaval of Necromancy (Devitrified Spew Metal)

 

I feel like I’m metaphorically friends with these guys now, my bros from Colombia, Funeral Vomit. I’ll pretend we’re close. Now then, some would probably call this release a slab of old-school brutality, something like that, but I’m going to first reference the original way I referred to these guys, and then flip it, because they’ve advanced. In my previous experience with them, Monumental Putrescence, I referred to their sound as molten puke. I stand by that. It was like a volcanic eruption of the most foul, but just beginning to near explosiveness, not totally there yet. However, with their latest, Upheaval of Necromancy, we find the earth has finally split in two, the rumbling has ceased, the retch from the below the soil is nearing completion, and in the finality of it all we find devitrified spew. What was once a violent, scorching liquid has hardened, with jagged, obsidian formations where once were riffs, upon which your meek body falls, dissected and crushed by its own weight upon the shimmering surface.

   

I may seem too metaphoric today, but trust me I’ve captured the difference in production here that makes it clear these guys mean business, and for a long time. Whereas their earlier work was in territory you could generally consider raw, with Upheaval of Necromancy the production is clarified, but yet slightly muffled with volcanic ash to keep the suffocation of the listener high in the presence of the band’s megalophobic atmosphere. The vocals tend to rest slightly in the darkness from whence came the magma, with their flickering, orange eyes glowing among the pyroclastic rubble of what was once death metal. Funeral Vomit rumbles, building and exploding, with sulfurous crags leaping from the deep pits formed by the residual heat of their new sound. As each track bubbles to completion and hardens, you find these guys are becoming a permanent, geological formation, cooled to a devastatingly terrifying shape. Great to see a band evolve its sound, and if the muscle you would have packed on with their last one wasn’t proof enough of the power, wait till you see the growth from this one. Ladies beware.
