Coscradh – Carving the Causeway to the Otherworld (Esoteric Blackened Death Metal)
The Irish are a proud folk, and now they should be prouder, because their native soil and blood has led to the creation of one of the greatest blackened death metal bands in history. This is more than a landmark, it’s a stela upon an entire country. No, better yet, an obelisk. No, no, not big enough! A colossal burial mound upon the world itself! Dublin’s Coscradh, an Old Irish word for, what else, slaughter, have been greatly misunderstood. This is somewhat understandable, as their particular brand of native-roots blackened death contains bizarre moments that would easily unsteady the most experienced of listeners, but therein lies part of their beauty. Perhaps it’s the chaos of their sound, as many have mentioned with slight scorn, or perhaps the violence they wield, as I said myself in a review of one of their earlier drops, but whatever the case may be, Coscradh are audacious in both primary meanings of the term. That being, they’re willing to take some gutsy risks with their sound, and, two, they’re doing it with a complete lack of respect! Thus the listener doesn’t matter, so place aside your preconceptions and learn something new. Carving the Causeway to the Otherworld should, though, have pieces of that blackened death sound you always hope for, it just finds a different path. It’s passionately savage, and the bounty of vocal variety will test your definition of the genre. Shrieking and low roars fight from primacy, with both, in the end, gaining the will of the listener as the music consumes.
