Melting Rot – Infatuation with Premeditation (Murderous Death Grind)

When I hear bands open up the pork factory from track one (vocals is what I’m saying), I normally zone out fast and then tune out faster. But some bands know how to work classic deliveries in ways that just goddamn work and we can’t let the complaints remain. That’s not so simple with death grind, however, which can combine the worst aspects of both genres, serving to degrade these well-worn pathways further. Too much of a focus on gore-soaked themes that leave the listener drowning in excess, or tearing the distortion up to such an extent you’re pretty sure you’re listening to power tools with no beef being cut. But bands like Melting Rot can exist in their own paradigm and elevate the death grind to the disorienting, corrosive plunge that is Infatuation with Premeditation.

These guys mean business, and they’re federal offense with that business. Normally the elements we find here would irritate the piss out of me in separation, but in the hands of a band like Melting Rot it all comes together in a compelling swirl of abrasive depth. First, it’s important to note the vocals sway from mud-bubbling pork lows to yells, shrieks, and roars, they don’t just roll in the muck. With this variety in lyrical delivery, we also find claustrophobic production, cramming the bass and guitar into a box about to burst, and then, to finalize the destruction, drums that can fucking groove bros. I mean this is some of the most intricate drumming I’ve heard in the past few years, and it creates a noticeable layer of complexity to Infatuation with Premeditation that doesn’t simply satisfy background tempos, like most death grind is too comfortable in doing. Melting Rot is the real, fucking murderous deal. Somehow, in spite of the simplicity, they’ve done it and they’ll likely do it again.
