Diabolic Oath – Unholy Barbaric Hymns (Bestial Blackened Death Metal of Pure Beast)

 

I just love Sentient Ruin Laboratories. Everything dude releases sounds something like this, but it never tires, it never ages, it remains robust in spite of similarities and in spite of continuing, confidently, on the same path. Feeble? Never. For he truly knows how to dig deep into the blackness, pulling out great sources of misery for those who seek the sounds of the damned, Diabolic Oath being the perfect example of this kind of cacophonic metal. I was amazed by these guys with a full-length from two years ago that oozed in the air like a newborn wraith, but man, even with an EP, in this case Unholy Barbaric Hymns, we find this three-piece in peak form, making bestial the word of the day in very little time. Space? They don’t need space to fill, this is internal strife to the infinite.

   

I’ve been cast into an abyss more than once before, trust me on that, but this time, these guys have me spiraling out of control, downward and onward, twirling about and then falling upon a mountain of bones as I careen into darkness, my mind dizzy and numb by the time I’ve hit the bottom. Unholy Barbaric Hymns showcases what this trio is about, from the elimination of structure to the building of chaos. Shifts in the flow break your sense of progress, collapsing reason into Barbaric Oath’s own monumental construction to degradation. Fretless guitars and triple-layered vocals are here again, but yet they’ve somehow managed to build even further upon previous work without compromising the foundation or overall structure that is this temple to forgotten gods best left dead they’ve crafted. Truly hideous, again, and likely in preparation for a new, full drop that will bring humanity further down to where it needs to be.
