Nuclear Tomb – Epoch Inhumane (Almost Ineffable Death Thrash)

 

I was the opposite of a fan of Nuclear Tomb when I received their last full-length, Terror Labyrinthian, for review. It was, quite simply, inchoate. Even the art was drab and undeveloped. So imagine my surprise, or perhaps lack thereof, when two years later I find, with Epoch Inhumane, they’re closer to ineffable. I could sense something growing within them, the beginnings of greatness, and this is definitely a further step, though there’s still work to be done. Onward warriors!

   

Dang, actually, what the hell happened?! Nuclear Tomb have evolved leagues beyond what I remember, to the extent that I’m pretty sure we’re witnessing a future forming here, in spite of their post-apocalyptic attitude. For a band that would be easily categorized as death thrash with some speed, Epoch Inhumane twists and turns like a garotte around the throat. All preconceptions are quickly strangled out, leaving the listener rather exasperated in the process. It’s rare you find this much variety in the simple delivery of any type of metal, but Nuclear Tomb do some amazing things here. My only complaint, and it wasn’t easy to find, trust me, is that same variety 100% needs to be applied to the vocal delivery. They work, and work well, but are quite static throughout, with very little courage to push beyond the limits, unlike the rest of the selection in Epoch Inhumane. Don’t get me wrong, they’re certainly what you’d expect, but that’s just my point. Next time, I expect even more greatness! Take it to the limit guys!
