Necromonger – Emanation of the Dying Perceptions (Bottomfeeder Goregrind)

I see something with pseudo-sophistication all over it, and often I turn the other way as it screams for attention from behind me. I got a feeling for this upon first seeing Necromonger in the promos, as we find “perceptions” not fitting with proper English in the title Emanation of the Dying Perceptions, as well as song titles like “Dissection of Consciosness” [sic], which I’m pretty sure they meant to spell like that. It’s exactly these elements of sciolism that about had this in the gutter for me, until I realized it all makes sense, somehow, and it might be luck, to be honest. Maybe an accident, but whatever because it worked.
Or it may be psuedo-intellectualism with a purpose, I’m still honestly not sure. Necromonger are the first band to carry that name. Coming from Bulgaria, they pull together lots of old gross style from different genres. I could drop vintage Carcass on you but shit there it is, however, it lacks that kind of intricacy, instead aiming more for the simplicity of other gore-focused acts such as Mortician. Shit, another name drop, which I hate, but let’s continue. See, that’s the thing, actually. You’ll find a ton that’s familiar here. They work simplicity well, with a deep, bottom-feeder atmosphere to their sound, and vocals that sound like a maniac surgeon in a 1980s Giallo. Perhaps it’s specifically this focus on artlessness that works to their advantage. The riffing in Emanation of the Dying Perceptions is enough that anyone with a basic sense of the mother-beat groove can get into it, while yet recognizing there are clear differences in the tracks. Most bands within the general sphere, or at least adjacent to, goregrind tire with cringe samples and a lack of true horror, but Necromonger, for what they’re worth, somehow managed, here at least, to sound unnerving without sounding trite. There are moments of annoying samples, but some genuine points of disgust that feel like a future the genre itself could use for a bit of revitalization. I’ll be paying attention in the future.
