Predeceased – Weirdo Riffers (Post-Punk Krautsludge)
Damn I had no way of figuring out a special genre for this one, so take what I put up there and love it. Further, here’s that old conundrum of mine. I don’t like reviewing stuff that’s already been released, but we have a special case here so hear me out. Predeceased have a […]

Dwelling Below – Wearisome Guardians (Dimensional Death Doom)
Dwelling Below, a heretofore criminally ignored death doom act from the United States, have carved a space for themselves in a genre known primarily for crushing atmosphere, but yet which can often lead to plodding that wearies the listener to the point of disgust. Thus perhaps calling this one Wearisome Guardians was a bad […]

Abominator – The Fire Brethren (Anti-Christian Evil Metal)
I feel like a lot of reviewers are going to refer to this as a “relentless assault on the senses,” or some regurgitated nonsense of similar form. Stop with the platitudes, please. I’ll admit, that’s difficult when you’re dealing with a blackened death metal band that’s been doing their thing for over thirty years. […]

Lugubrious Garment – Demo MMXXV (Atavistic Death Metal)
I’m so proud of myself that I got to use the word ‘lugubrious’ finally. I actually didn’t even know it was a word until this gem oozed itself up to the surface of the promo swamp. A side project of the dejected Italian insanity machine Cosmic Putrefaction (Gabriele Gramaglia), Lugubrious Garment was conceived as […]

Thaumaturgy – Pestilential Hymns (Pestilential Death Metal)
I don’t believe I had heard of Thaumaturgy before this one, so one can assume they were something of a whisper in the community, which at this point returns as a virulent plague. Their latest here, Pestilential Hymns, is a masterful, one-man (now apparently three) descent into a suffocating miasma of blackened death metal. […]

NOIR NOIR – Black Curtain / Divine Swelling (Deathwave)
I tend to avoid releases like this, but I so rarely receive anything of the industrial or out of the various wave genres that I need to be less picky. Not picky about the music, because this kills, but about the details. In this case, to begin, the work is incredible, my only hesitation […]

DEATHFUCKINGWOUND – VOID MMXXV (Entrenched Nihilistic Grindcore)
DEATHFUCKINGWOUND. That’s the name, huh? Well, I almost deleted the email, not because I’m a sensitive man, but because I didn’t feel like writing another review this week. Yet, with their completely nihilistic aesthetic, I decided to give it a few seconds, and found myself immediately eviscerated by VOID MMXXV, even a mere 10 […]

Evoken – Mendacium (Existential Funeral Doom)
Huh, what do you know? I didn’t think a band from the US could pull off something like this, but it looks like the winds of unearthly spirits are finally sweeping the lands, or at least the east coast as this band’s from New Jersey. New Jersey? Holy this this is a miracle, and […]

Illusive Key – Consume Us (Atmospheric Ritualistic Black Metal)
Illusive Key, a German-Belgian coven who’ve just recently allowed their eyes to glow from far back in the darkness, are the type of band that prefers a bit of mystery. It’s clear, having listened to this thoroughly, that there’s skill to be found here, meaning they likely have experience outside of this project. And […]
