Heruvim – Mercator (Deep Thoughts Death Metal)
It’s easy to pin a band with a single genre, but the question can remain, does the pin actually stick? Heruvim are unabashed in calling themselves “old school death metal.” Their debut full-length, Mercator, is an atlas of the genre, yet their presentation is much different. This can be easily summarized in a variety […]

Motherless – Do You Feel Safe? (Traumatic Doom Punk)
Been craving something with punk attitude recently, and thankfully this one came in the promo set some weeks ago. I’ve been through probably 15 times since then. Chicago’s Motherless has a penchant for answering their own questions. The immediate answer to Do You Feel Safe? is a rather quick “no,” taking the paranoia of […]

Hunger – Ruler of the Wolves (Sword and Sorcery Thrash Metal)
Boy there’s like nothing about this band currently. When you see absolutely nothing on Metallum and AI slop claims they don’t exist, you know you’re in trouble, or about to come upon a true treasure. Thankfully, this is the latter type of find. It took forever for me to track them down (in Internet […]

Lvthn – The Devil’s Bridge (Smarty Pants Occult Black Metal)
Ah, the serene cover art you see above so accurately captures the experience of listening to The Devil’s Bridge. I don’t believe I’ve heard of Belgium’s Lvthn until this moment, and though they’ve been around for over a decade, their offerings have been sparse as they maintain an aloof existence in the community. But […]

Unpossess (Edwardian First-Person Survival Horror)
Here’s a great example of a game that needs a larger player base, especially for one that’s so creepily unique. Unpossess, subtitled Exorcism Simulator, was released to very little fanfare back in March and has yet to gain significant traction. Compare its current base to that of Ghost Watchers, released in July, four months […]
Void – Forbidden Morals (Theatrical Horror Thrash)
We’ve got that spooking coming soon, and what better way to prepare us for that mood than a band that utilizes its heavy metal magic to craft stories about vampires, castles, bats, and the like, right? I almost didn’t review this, because, generally, I avoid bands with huge fan bases. But, at times, I […]

Ash Magick – Rituals of Anathematic East (Real Black Metal Witchcraft)
I feel like only close friends with a similar, nihilistic mindset, could craft something of this nature. Lo and behold, the two soulless husks who made this appear to be such a case. Suffice to say the two women behind Ash Magick, and their latest offering of ritualistic, black metal witchcraft, Rituals of Anathematic […]

Hebephrenique – decathexis (Post-Post Black Metal)
I’m just going to start by saying this is a rare instance where an album deserves a perfect score. And I kind of figured that from the digging into the self suggested by the cover but damn it to hell I didn’t think Australia’s Hebephrenique would be delivering this kind of craziness. I’m barely […]

Panzerchrist – Maleficium Part 2 (Legitimately Good Witch Metal)
I was familiar with Panzerchrist before this one, but I passed. One of the reasons I passed is the themes. Witches, witch hunters, maleficia, Christ, hell, even panzers? Damn, this shit’s batting zero and this isn’t even baseball. Are they aware of that? So when I saw Part 2 of their Maleficium series appear […]

Fell Omen – Caelid Dog Summer (Medieval Anlog Metalpunk)
Yo, my boy is back. Actually, he hasn’t been gone that long. It’s only been seven months since his last one lol! But, I expect nothing less than that from a big dude who loves steel, motorcycles, and wooing the medieval ladies with flowers (band promo for this, his latest). If the first album, […]
