Eternal Champion – Ravening Iron (SEGA! Epic Heavy Metal)
You guys been like playing that Sega Genesis Nintendo stuff man? To be honest when someone dares name themselves after a totally overrated 16-bit fighting game you can’t expect much. SEGA (you scream)! Maybe it’s just coincidence though, I don’t know, actually it is. The name Eternal Champion comes from some fantasy literature stuff, […]

Unholy Vampyric Slaughter Sect (The World Trapped in Vampyric Sway (Darker and Darker)) (Damn Dude Took My Parenthesis Joke)
I changed the art on this using the original piece that makes up the finished cover, which for some reason was reduced to B/W and just a total mess, but hey, that’s what happens in basement black metal, or BBM, this being the US variety, or USBBM I guess we’ll say from now on. […]

Vacant Eyes – A Somber Preclusion of Being (Turgid Funeral Doom)
Oh I fooled you with the subtitle of this review lol. Hey, since Vacant Eyes were being wordy, I figured I’d be wordy, even though what our subtitle today implies is their wordiness is a defect. That’s just like a joke man. In fact, it’s all in good praise. A Somber Preclusion of Being […]

Fleshdriver – Leech (Almost Tiresome Death Metal)
Well, here’s a release that almost wears out its welcome but manages to press a smile into your cheeks anyway. Carrying on the tradition of Floridian death metal come Fleshdriver, a drum and guitar tag team that, to date, have but two singles and Leech, a demo, to their name. For lacking bass and […]

Drouth – Excerpts from a Dread Liturgy (Black Metal Manifest)
Wow, I ended up liking this one more than I expected. Leave it to US black metal to excite me again, after months and months of drudgery. I was getting sick of the snowstorm tremolo, the corpse paint no one remembers the purpose of anymore, the lo-fi ” but that’s how it’s supposed to […]

Frayle – 1692 (Bitter Doom for the Broken Soul)
Most doom is satisfied thematically with smoking or taking drugs, tossing tabletop RPG dice, witch stuff, or plain sloth. They don’t hide it, either, and with a simple name or cover you know exactly what to expect and you’re both disappointed and not. But as of late female-fronted doom has been a particular favorite […]

Xantam – Altered State (AD&D Blackened Death Metal)
Is it a thing that bands starting with “Xa” are one dude? Total exaggeration on my part, because only Xasthur comes to mind, but now there’s Xantam. Maybe I’m on to something… Anyway, so clearly there’s an AD&D obsession here, because one, dude’s got a beholder on both of his releases (this and a […]

Trench Warfare – Hatred Prayer (Ear Infection Death Metal)
It’s easy to start back up after a vacation where I got a double ear infection (inner and middle, both ears) with some filthy death metal that sounds just like that. Actually listened to this one quite a bit before I left for that fateful, poisonous trip, so it seems fitting to return with […]

Drawn and Quartered – The One Who Lurks (WTF Am I Looking At Metal)
Boy did I sit on this one a long time. I mean, yeah, we sit on stuff a long time in general, but this is different because hard copy submissions, provide we will review them in the first place, have always gotten priority. Why you break your own rules? My excuse is I listened […]

Construct of Lethe – Exiler (Pretentious Thesaurus Metal)
So here’s the thing, Construct of Lethe know exactly what they are doing musically. And by that, I mean they have such a refined ear for composition, recording, and compelling melody. They don’t just stop at the melodic death metal drudge and drear and are clearly interested in pushing their sound into a musically […]
