Sabbath of the Fox-Devils (Goosebumps Went Splatterpunk)
I had the pleasure of meeting Sam Richard, and others, at VoidCon 2024 in WV, and was particularly drawn to Sabbath of the Fox-Devils, as well as other titles by Weirdpunk Books, which he’s a part of. Don’t judge a book by its cover? Lol fuck that, you can totally judge something by its […]

Bloodshed (Gory Horror FPS Bullet Heaven)
Hell yeah. First off, can we stop referring to retro FPS games as “boomer shooters?” That doesn’t make any goddamn sense! You’re connecting the old FPS market to older players, which is fair, I mean hey I’m 45 after all, but I’m not a fucking boomer. The boomer generation refers to the “Baby Boom” […]

Nosferatu (The Most Perfect of Gothic Vampires)
It’s hard to determine a good starting point for something like this. With the amount of press Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu received pre and post-release, what more can be said? You’d think it’d be pretty easy since I teach a damn class on vampires and know all about this shit, but the real goal here […]

Balefire – S/T (Eldritch Death Metal)
I’m gonna start out by saying the only complaint I have with this debut EP, or whatever you want to call it, is it’s too damn short. Goddamn it guys, when you come with this much dark violence I expect longer! I demand more! Continue the beating! Beat me into the ground! Pummel my […]

Shrieking Demons – The Festering Dwellers (Metaphysical Death Metal)
I’ve got to keep giving it to Transcending Obscurity. Guy always drops albums from bands pushing the envelope way past the norm. Though I may only review his stuff here and there, that’s really a standard of greatness I apply to everything. As I always say, if you see it here, you know it’s […]

Hesperia – Fra li Monti Sibillini: Black Medieval Winter over the Sibylline Mounts
I always try to give something a chance even if I think it will kill me. Italy’s Hesperia is an example of this. All the black metal trappings on the damn cover that usually lead to total shitpuke. I’ve seen it too many times. And that’s just the thing. We’ve got boots in snow. […]

Dragonknight – Legions (Melodic Dragon Power Metal)
I am again faced with the power metal conundrum. Namely, what makes the good good? One of the primary issues for the genre is that it relies heavily on classic fantasy tropes that go back to the prehistory of Dungeons & Dragons and earlier literature. To be honest, not much has changed in this […]

Hexenbrett – Dritte Beschwörung: Dem Teufel eine Tochter (Blackened Rock Past Puberty)
Finally! I’ve been waiting for mystery duo Hexenbrett to get their shit together. They definitely had the mystique down. No one really knows where they’re from (most likely Germany, but possibly the United States), but putting this into their particular brand of blackened rock has been largely a miss since their first EP in […]

Horse Butcher – S/T (Also Under the Name of Bestial Deathgrind)
Oh, God… Now, I’m well aware that Sentient Ruin Laboratories has totally crowned himself king of the darkest of underground vileness, but I don’t think I was entirely prepared for Horse Butcher (featuring members of Hissing) and their debut full-length, also under the name of Horse Butcher. References to Carcass probably seem replete for […]

The 7th Guest VR (First-Person Haunted House Puzzle Horror)
I’ve often found the world of VR gaming is like navigating dusty tomes in a library. Because the market is still, arguably, in its infancy, and perhaps Golden Age, the way information moves is much different. Most VR advertising is done specifically through suggestions within Meta, or whichever device you use, and is not […]
