Watcher – Mistress of Our Time (Firmamental Heavy Metal)
One genre that has greatly benefitted from modern-day production and sensibilities has been good, old-fashioned, unc heavy metal. We all know the greats, I need not name a single one, and even listening to old recordings from the late 1970s and early 1980s still feels timeless. One would think that repeating the formula long […]

Skumstrike – Flawless Intrigue from Hell (Adjectivally Blackened Speed Metal Punk)
I like it when bands have no fucking clue what they’re talking about. You don’t need to even know proper English (or any language) when you bring power like Skumstrike but, yes, let us analyze what’s going on here. Flawless Intrigue from Hell? Bros, WTF does that even mean lol? The adjective is completely […]

Ludgar – Violent Visions (Blackened Vile Thrash Punk)
Well shit, I don’t need to say too much today. After you set the mood with the intro, I could toss out any of the tracks here and say “there you go,” and leave it strictly at that. But I know you need substance, and I get my reel ideas by talking nonsense, so […]

Shewolff – We’re All Gonna Fukkin’ Die (Lycanthropic Metalpunk)
Does anyone really need to comment on a band called Shewolff with a cover spouting werewolf, coffin, and flaming swords as its imagery? I’d think not, but Jesus Christ you people demand words from me so you’re going to get them! Belgium’s Shewolff are one of those bands that suddenly bursts onto the scene […]

Toxikull – Turbulence (Mountainous Heavy Speed Metal)
I’ve received promos from Portugal’s Toxikull a few times if memory serves me right, and I hated every single minute of it. Obviously, this has all changed with their latest full-length, Turbulence. In fact I didn’t even remember it was the same band I had passed on more than once until I checked out […]

Chalice – Divine Spear (Melodic Medieval Metal of Christian Might)
Here’s an album that took me some time to grasp. I won’t say “grower,” because honestly Finland’s Chalice know what they’re doing. This doesn’t grow on you, you need to grow on it. Because these guys really know what they’re doing. The issue was simple, being that I was simply not used to listening […]

Karloff – Revered by Death (Blackened Ghoul Punk)
Certain genres refuse to extricate themselves from the fetters of decades ago. I guess it’s a one part nostalgia, one part fear of the new. I’ve seen this phenomenon in hardcore, rockabilly, and especially horror punk. The last example is notorious for this, as doowop vampires have been around for awhile, stemming from the […]

Barbarian – Reek of God (Dark Fantasy Death Speed Thrash with a Dash of Eldritch Heavy Metal)
Dying Victims Productions has been a favorite label of mine recently. I can’t remember when I first encountered dude’s stellar line-up, but over time it more and more brings a smile to my face when I see a promo come in with the logo because I know I’m in for some basement-dweller metal (of […]

Morbyda – Under the Spell (Witch Metal Inferno)
Damn I love this shit. For some reason, though, I didn’t at first, but this is nowhere close to a “grower,” I should have got my shit together from day one son. That’s because Morbyda are the MFing gawds of this kind of metal folks. Do you hear me folks? Is it speed metal? […]

FLY! – …or Die! (Motorcycle Fume Huffing Dirty Aussie Rock)
Here’s something you all need a dose of, right into the nostrils and up into the brain. Dying Victim Productions has really been taking some chances with his releases in the past few years, giving due to bands no one has heard of yet, but that’s because dude has an ear for the good […]
