Nuclear Tomb – Epoch Inhumane (Almost Ineffable Death Thrash)
I was the opposite of a fan of Nuclear Tomb when I received their last full-length, Terror Labyrinthian, for review. It was, quite simply, inchoate. Even the art was drab and undeveloped. So imagine my surprise, or perhaps lack thereof, when two years later I find, with Epoch Inhumane, they’re closer to ineffable. I […]

Diabolic Oath – Unholy Barbaric Hymns (Bestial Blackened Death Metal of Pure Beast)
I just love Sentient Ruin Laboratories. Everything dude releases sounds something like this, but it never tires, it never ages, it remains robust in spite of similarities and in spite of continuing, confidently, on the same path. Feeble? Never. For he truly knows how to dig deep into the blackness, pulling out great sources […]

Nighnacht – Limb Service (Perversely Grotesque Blackened Cannibal Metal)
OMG yesssssss! I was feeling somewhat depressed by the promos I had sitting here for release that are coming out in the next three weeks. Other than one, already reviewed, the rest sucked. Let me poisoncoat it a bit more. The rest fucking sucked. I can’t recall a week this bad in a long […]

Hexenaltar – Descending Curse (Gnashing Blackened Thrash)
Well, here’s another Polish force-to-be-reckoned-with to add to the ever-growing, chapter-by-chapter tome of awesome Polish metal bands (of any genre). A particular bite is growing ever-present in the national sound of Polish metal, and if worshipping an altar of dark magic is your calling, well, these elements come together quite well here. Hexenaltar I […]

The Salt Grows Heavy (Dark Fantasy Mermaid Shit)
Killer, bathyal mermaids, and an androgynous, reanimated corpse acting as a plague doctor certainly makes an interesting story. In Cassandra Khaw’s novella The Salt Grows Heavy, a familiar fairytale is revisited with a gory and introspective twist. What do you do with aquatic beauty with sharp teeth, bewitching eyes, and iridescent hair? You remove her tongue […]

Shewolff – We’re All Gonna Fukkin’ Die (Lycanthropic Metalpunk)
Does anyone really need to comment on a band called Shewolff with a cover spouting werewolf, coffin, and flaming swords as its imagery? I’d think not, but Jesus Christ you people demand words from me so you’re going to get them! Belgium’s Shewolff are one of those bands that suddenly bursts onto the scene […]

Desolus – Dwellers of the Twilight Void (Impending Apocalypse Satanic Thrash)
Yes, my boys are back! Now, before someone construes this as favoritism, it just so happens I love these guys, and it just so happens I’m reviewing them again, got it? Because they’re good! So no accusations of pandering, please! And, let me tell you, I don’t bother with bands unless they show general […]

Deadgirl (Zombie Slave Lover Film)
If you ever feel yourself begin to crave a film that provides necrophilia, a coming-of-age story, or body horror all in bloodied package, there’s Deadgirl. Made in 2008 and released for its 15th anniversary by Unearthed in 2023, the film has aged surprisingly well. The story follows two teenage boys, Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and […]

Lago – Vigil (Isolating Experimental Death Metal)
Well, you know, I sometimes fancy myself a hideous shade of human existence, or at least the child of such beings, and Lago, who hail from the United States, are perfectly ready to fulfill my desires to identify as other to such a severe degree I’m unrecognizable as something alive. I’ve decided from now […]

Hrob – Brána Chladu (Heterogeneitic Brumal Death Doom)
Everything about this album is so damn cohesive, even something so apparently simple as the album title, because nothing escapes the clutches of Slovakia’s Hrob. Yet we have fools out there referring to this as “putrid” because they lack the skill to understand the finer details of a band’s sound. Brána Chladu reveals not […]
