Exanimis – Marionnettiste (Orchestral Steam Punk Death Metal)
So I was thoroughly surprised by this one and now I have a deep-seated craving for orchestral death metal with steam punk stuff going on. Not black metal, I get a bit of that, like I want more bands to do this kind of thing but perhaps it’s just too hard for the provincials, […]

Sadistic Drive – Anthropophagy (Dirty Finnish Depraved Metal)
Let’s end this week (I think I’m ending it) with some depraved metal ye fools. I was hit with at least one other Finnish band of this style, more on the grind side, this past month, and man did they suck. You can almost tell immediately by the art whether a band of this […]

Chainsword – Blightmarch (Dakka Dakka Metal)
Ooooh those angry, angry Poles playing their video games. Still getting out that war angst I suppose. It’s understandable, the country was wrecked by subjugation and terror for like five-hundred years until the end of WWII, so I’d be pretty pissed too. But hey, I’ll allow it for at least one reason, that being […]

Violation (Naturalistic Rape Revenge Film)
With a few isolated exceptions (1986’s The Ladies Club), throughout the 20th century the rape-revenge subgenre was the exclusive province of male filmmakers. But since the Soska sisters threw open the doors in 2012 with American Mary, a wave of female-directed reimagined rape-revenge films has touched every corner of the cinemaverse, from New French […]

Socioclast – S/T (Bittersweet Grindcore)
Well this was surprisingly enjoyable for an album that first appears to be a rip off of some Teitanblood shit, but not nearly as long. In fact it’s not even half of that or so. Albums that deliver in such a short span of time are amazing to me when they work. Most bands […]

Perihelion Gnosis – Syzugial Summoning (Young Lad Death Doom Mastery)
I love primitive art if done right, and yes this would be an example. There’s a certain crudeness to this type of style that in the hands of a master speaks like a dejected sociopath scribbling esoteric nonsense during study hall. Perihelion Gnosis, in only a mere two tracks, makes it clear he’s easily […]

Evil – Possessed by Evil (Stop Being So Good Japanese Blackened Thrash)
Oh my gosh can Japan stop being so good? Seriously they’re always so good. Why is any genre that country touches so good? Man something going on over there, I swear. That brings us to the unassuming blackened thrash outfit Evil, who chose perhaps the most obvious name of all for this type of […]

Unreal Life (Unearth Your Dead Memories Point-and-Click Sadness Game)
Ah, I just love finding games like this now and then. Such a relief and such a testament to the ingenuity of the indie market, but in particular those one-person insanity factories that just get it. Unreal Life was a random find by myself, ahem, that hopefully gets some more credit after this review, […]

Carcinoma – Labascation (Chaotic Blackened Death Swirl)
Man sometimes I feel like this face here. All melty and swirly and shit. I should be more specific in saying I want to feel like this face here. I’m not there yet, I need something to bring the transformation to fruition, and Carcinoma should be able to deliver if only for the fact […]

Omination – NGR (Collapsing Cathedral Post-Apocalyptic Funeral Doom)
I wasn’t sure what to think of this one, at first, but I know I needed to listen. We’ve got tons of references built into that cover all under the post-apocalyptic banner: Knights Templar dude (maybe Blind Dead) with anime sword, Mad Max car in Dune sand, some Dark Tower castle, maybe Dracula, four […]
