Mistcavern – Into Twilight (Ethereal Black Metal)
Well wasn’t this a little surprise this week? Surprising in the sense that I thought it would be beyond typical, the usual, the banal. So typical it was likely a simple stereotype given form. But something told me in that hazy, miasmatic cover there was likely something of a musical equivalent. As usual, I […]

Concilivm – A Monument in Darkness (Alchemical Death Metal)
Heavenly God the end is near with this one phew. Though not the first Chilean band I’ve encountered, nor the first band summoning such disgust, Concilivm is definitely one of the new greats, and proof that their homeland is one of the hottest pits of corrupted metal in the world these days. Caustic, infectious, […]

Skumstrike – Deadly Intrusions (Blackened Speed Punk of Much Rejoicing)
Ahhh rejoice, this is an easy one. This is one of those albums that’s incredibly simple to review but most critics wasted, or will waste, their time on saying it, relying on inexcusable and nonsensical references to Shakespeare while experimenting in diluted Gonzo journalism, in the end obscuring WTF they’re trying to say and […]

Dauþuz – Vom schwarzen Schmied – Bergkgesænge (Mining Black Metal Works Wow)
Spectacular. Not only do we have here a band reinvestigating itself after only a few months, let alone at all, but we have a true achievement in the “niche effect,” which will hereby refer to any bands attempting to work bizarre themes into their sound. Usually tragic, here it’s epic. When so much has […]

Luzifer – Iron Shackles (German Birthright Heavy Metal)
Nice. I say this not necessarily because this particular release is the greatest thing ever, but it’s definitely the greatest promo of this week. Man, yet again, I got slammed by some of the most banal submissions ever. Horrid cover art, or music so derivative and stale I thought it was old emails from […]
Inhuman Assault Productions \ Nevada \ nuclear metal \ Reno \ United States \ war metal
Triumph – Retaliation Warfare (Dystopian Nuclear Assault War Metal)
This week has been slim with promos worth listening to, and as you can see only one of those was worth reviewing. The rest…I just can’t even… But Nevada’s Triumph, with that militant apocalypse looking cover, was probably going to be at least a safe pass because it’s war metal, but in this case […]
dissonant black metal \ Godz Ov War Productions \ Greece \ Maximos Manolis \ United Kingdom
Amaltheia – S/T (Straight Outta Nowhere Dissonant Black Metal)
Boy this was a tough week for promos in the sense that I received a shit ton of them over the past month. Most of those were easy to scrap because of crud art or blah sound, but a particularly fine selection came from Polish powerhouse Godz Ov War Productions. Unfortunately I can only […]
Valais – S/T (Oppressive Occult Black Metal)
Ahhh allow me, and then you, to relax and imbibe in this finely malicious black metal of the occult right here. It already had all the markings of the best of the best of the better best, but the true test, as usual, is beyond the visuals to the sound. Valais, in true modern […]
Babylon Doom Cult Records \ Ordo Vampyr Orientis \ Sore Ear Collective \ United States \ USBM \ vampyric black metal
Bat Magic – Feast of Blood (Vampires Are Cool Again Black Metal)
It didn’t surprise me I liked this one. Usually I’d pass on such a simplistic cover with an obvious vampire bent that’s likely to be more kitsch than clique. I mean Jesus Christ it states right there on Bandcamp “RECORDED IN A CASTLE UNDER THE BLOOD MOON ANNO MMXVI.” ALL CAPS too, I didn’t […]

Corrupter – Descent into Madness (That Punishing Type of Death Metal)
I needed some punishing blows to my soul this week hot damn. I like need more potassium in my body or something and everything is out of whack (very true real-life story). I want to go full beast again so this is my current placebo this week until that becomes a reality, but even […]
