The Answer Lies in the Black Void – Thou Shalt (Hypnagogic Doom Metal)
Now there’s a mouthful of a band name! And Thou Shalt is a mouthful of an album. Atmospheric types of doom seem to take one of two primary approaches; either they crush with overwhelming chaos or, as in the case of The Answer Lies in the Black Void, they crush with dreamstates. That particular […]

Churchburner (Black Metal Gangsta Rap Metafiction)
This landed into my emails with no description apart from something along the lines of “this sounds good!!” So when I tried to search it up for myself, just to get a little insight, apart from its obvious namesake, I trawled and found very little. But I was increasingly intrigued because of it. No […]

Seraphic Entombment – Sickness Particles Gleam (Pre-Cambrian Fetid Death Doom)
Angry angry angry! You guys are sure angry! But, hey, you’d be this angry if you dripped off the walls of a sewer like Seraphic Entombment did. That ooze sticking in the mortar poured probably before time itself? That’s Seraphic Entombment. The misshapen pre-Cambrian artefacts of life that crawled from the seas and died […]

Vanishing Kids – Miracle of Death (Psychedelic Gloom Metal)
I always wanted to be a melty-faced teen and now that dream is realized even though I’m in my 40s. Vanishing Kids are like one of those “sleeper hits,” but a band, and the major difference being that their latest, Miracle of Death, is absolutely not unpromising upon release. I mean, like, shit, okay […]

Night at the Gates of Hell (Butt Jokes Survival Horror)
Lol, love it! If you’re into this kind of thing, you certainly know that retro-inspired horror survival is booming. With legends like Puppet Combo crapping out PS1-era violence and shock, it’s channeling nostalgia for things past and which we wish still existed. Games like this make it so! And some of these titles mix […]

Uranium – Pure Nuclear Death (Black Industrial)
Now here’s a damn fine contrast to the review I just posted. From gloom pop to this. So first I lament the fact I don’t get enough gloom and dark pop, and here we are with something else I don’t get a lot of, or at least usually not good, black and/or dark industrial. […]

MØAA – Jaywalker (Gloomy Dream Pop)
Been awhile since I got a sweet taste of something like this. Occasionally some gloom comes in, but it’s trite and ineffective. It doesn’t make me languid, it makes me mad, kid. Lol, sad, a pathetic intro… Anyway I don’t even remember how I happened upon the latest from MØAA but I did, and […]

The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales (Intrepid Story-Slicing Privateer Simulator)
How does a night of transporting yourself into books, stealing key plot devices, and selling them to pay off your jail sentence sound? The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales is this and more, layering pages of different plots on top of each other in a top-down, point-and-click/turn-based combat action adventure. With a more than serviceable […]

Forndom – Alster (Haunting Dark Ritual Folk)
Yeah I get these ambient submissions sometimes and it always reminds me how difficult it is it to make a lasting impression or be effective in the genre. It’s far beyond that in difficulty if you’re remaking tracks within the genre that were released in a previously different form. This is exactly what Sweden’s […]

Third Storm – The Locust Mantra (Blackened Melodic Thrash Death Metal Woah)
Here’s another interesting one from Sweden. I saw a bit of semi-hate concerning The Locust Mantra out there, mainly that it doesn’t “stand out,” but I’ve said it before is that always necessary? Plus, Third Storm are also much older than you’d expect so perhaps think a bit, listen harder, and see what comes […]
